Originally a quaint street of general retailers dating back more than 1,000 years, Sadler Gate literally ‘woke up’ one Saturday morning in September 1965 – the town’s first Boutique had opened and it changed everything. London had Carnaby Street and Kings Road, and now Derby had Sadler Gate.
From that moment, historical, sleepy Sadler Gate would experience a rapid change that would continue to develop beyond the end of that decade.
It became a magnet to Derby’s young set and would see a clamour of new independent businesses getting in on the act – more boutiques, fashion stores, hairdressers, a record shop, cafés, clubs, bars, and a bistro.
From the mid-sixties onwards Sadler Gate belonged to the young and it became ‘the’ place to shop and socialise.
